Who be me?
My name is R.K. Bentley and I am currently living in the New England Area.
I’ve always loved to write. I began writing on my dad TR-80 Laptop back in the days of Transformers and GI Joe. At the time, I didn’t know the stories I wrote were called “Fan Fiction.”
In high school and into college I began writing on my Apple IIGS. I took some advise from a small gang of writers and artists called the Ameature Creators Union and decided to drop the Fan Fiction Elements from my stories and write a story that would stand on it’s own.
In 1996, I met Paul Chabot and after a brief stint writing a comic strip called Rah-Coco The Kilted Berserker, we decided to self publish a black and white comic book called Totems.
Totems lasted for 4 issues. Issue 0, 1 and 2 had a print run of 500, Issue 3 had a print run of 1000. Over the next four years we traveled to different comic book conventions in Chicago, Dallas, Virginia, San Diego, New Hampshire and Atlanta.
In 2000, JamBooks.com approached us to publish the comics on-line. At the time, since DC had come out with a book called Totems (which dealth with nothing even close to our story line) we changed the name of the book to Karmakaze.
Issues 4 was in black and white and the end of our first story arc with Issue 5 was in full color.
Unfortunately, Jambooks.com ceased to exist and the comic book market took a slump in 2001 and we decided to put Totems to bed and try our hand at Screenwriting.
After writing a spec script for Smallville we wrote a Horror Screenplay called “Off The Post. . .” which promptly made it into the Quarterfinals a few screenplay contests and made it into the Top 1000 of Project Greenlight 3.
In 2004, I joined NaNoWrimo and wrote a novel based on the same universe I had created during Junior High and High School. The Novel was temp titled: Gehma: A Rider’s Tale.
I started a Daily Photoblog in 2004 and continues to be updated regularly with pictures.
In 2005, after moving from my apartment into my grandfather’s place and after coming off of a Firefly/Serenity rush I decided to write a Firefly Serenity Fanfic entitled Leaves on the Wind for NaNoWrimo and only managed to get 40k done before running out of steam.
Early in 2006 a decision was made to try and make one of my ideas into a on-line comic book. Unfortunately, Paul’s laptop Hard Drive, my laptop Hard Drive and even a backup Hard Drive shit the bed all within a month of each other and slowed things down a bit
In June 2006, I went to my first Red Sox VS. Yankees Game in New York with Vanburen and unfortunetly both games the Red Sox lost.
In November, I signed up to be CO-Municipal Liason for Rhode Island. For my third NaNoWrimo novel I wrote a horror novel set in Rhode Island.
I decided to go with Gehma: A Rider’s Tale. After some brainstorming we decided to rename it Welcome to Gehma.
In 2007, myself and Paul decided to go back to the Television Spec Scripts, we added another writer named Brendan O’Neil for this spec.
On the NaNoWrimo Front: I decided to try and write a NaNoWrimo Novel that unfortunately, sputtered out around 27k words. Heading advice from one of my word war buddies, I decided to write 23k words more of my 2004 novel.
Going into 2008, Welcome to Gehma continues to take shape, the website front end has been moved from XComic to Word Press and Comic Life looks to be a great addition to this project.
